How It Works
- Answer a question. In a quick quiz or topic study, or when you review your results.
- Ask HamQuizAI. It sees the question, your answer and any diagram, with the syllabus, reference booklet and licence for your level.
- Talk it through. Ask why, ask for it more simply, or how it works in practice. Push back and it explains again.
What It's Like
I picked B because my club instructor told me that when you put resistors in series the total always ends up lower than the smallest one, like with parallel. So 22.99 Ω made sense to me since it's less than 39. That's right isn't it, series makes it smaller?
Not quite, and this is worth fixing now because it's a classic mix-up. It's parallel that gives a total lower than the smallest resistor. In series the total is always bigger than any single resistor.
Think of it as water flowing through two narrow pipes one after the other: the flow has two obstacles to get past, so the overall opposition is the sum of both. In parallel, the current gets two routes to choose from, so it's easier overall and the total drops below the smallest value.
So for your circuit, the resistors are joined end to end, which is series: Rt = R1 + R2 = 39 Ω + 56 Ω = 95 Ω. That's option A. Your 22.99 Ω is what you would get if they were in parallel, which is why it looks plausible but doesn't fit the diagram.
A handy check in the exam: if your series answer is smaller than one of the resistors, something has gone wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is HamQuizAI free?
Free accounts get one conversation a day, once the account is a day old and its email is confirmed. Premium gives you 10 a day.
What does HamQuizAI know about?
The question you're asking about, your answer and any diagram, plus the syllabus, reference booklet and licence conditions for your level.
Can HamQuizAI make mistakes?
Yes. It's in beta, and like any AI it can be wrong. Check anything you're not sure about in the reference booklet, and report the chat if something's off.
Will HamQuizAI help me in the exam?
No. It talks about questions you've already answered here, and it won't help with a live exam.
What happens to my conversations?
They're kept with your account for 30 days after your last message (12 months if you report one), and they aren't used to train AI models. The privacy notice has the detail.
